Not-so-typical musings of an 18-49 year old male

The Super Bowl

Yeah I never did post during the Super Bowl, did I? Not that anyone is reading this blog right now anyways! Still there was a solid reason for it, the commercials SUCKED! Not a single one wowed me and I can honestly say I don’t recall much of any of them. Ahh well, better luck next year, right?

Superbowl Sunday Commercials

For those of you who have somehow escaped the two weeks of hype following it, this years Super Bowl is going to be a big one. We have the New England Patriots against one of their rivals the New York Giants in the epic fight for dominance over the NFL. Who cares about that though when companies are spending millions of dollars to shove their commercial in your face for 30 seconds? Well, I still do, but I also am really looking forward to the commercials.

Last year the commercials were for the most part very underwhelming. In fact the only one that I remember explicitly is the Volkswagen mini Darth Vader commercial. This year though some companies are doing something that I consider to be sacrilege and showing their commercials online well before the game. What they are trying to gain is beyond me as there is no bigger audience than the folks watching the Super Bowl and a lot of people that I know who aren’t football fans willingly sit through the game just for the commercials. So I don’t agree with it, but I wont let it spoil the moment.

This Sunday after I watch my beloved Patriots I will be staying up late and blogging about the commercials, putting them into either commercials I love or commercials I hate. So I hope you guys enjoy my musings on them and here’s to hoping this is the start of a beautiful blog.

That often strained and wordy first post.

Consumer Reports states that the average American is exposed to 247 commercial messages a day.  That is a very impressive statistic when you consider the amount of work that goes into crafting, testing and eventually playing those commercials! At just about every corporation whose product you frequently purchase there is a group of people who spend their days targeting specific groups of people to either begin or continue to buy their goods. It is an even more important statistic when you consider how many commercials are enjoyable, successful and entertaining compared to how many commercials are annoying, ineffective and way off their intended mark.

So that’s where I come in with why I am writing this blog, to provide commentary on the good ads that make you laugh and the bad ads that make you cringe. Who am I that is so qualified to make these assessments you ask? Well according to the ad world I am one of the most coveted demographics, 18 to 49 year old males with some secondary education and a decent full time job. I am not an ad man, you wont get any inside information on advertisements from me because I have no connections to the industry. What you will get is my rants and ramblings about commercials. I will at times launch into profanity laced tirades against ads and the companies that make them. Other times I will display an unwavering admiration and respect for the men and women responsible for making me laugh.

If you hate commercials you are probably in the right spot and if you love commercials you are probably in the right spot too. I can’t say this blog will amount to much more than one mans attempt to speak his mind to advertisers, but I can promise it will be worth the price of admission for you.
